Let's Start the new year with a little service!

I'm talking about Servant Leadership. We have all heard the old saying that people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. There is wisdom in this mantra. Studies like Gallup's Q12 add legitimacy to this claim in the area of workforce engagement and organizational outcomes.

 

The concept of servant leadership is not a new one but came into prominence as a legitimate business management approach following an essay written by Robert K. Greenleaf entittled The Servant as a Leader. In that essay, Greenleaf stated "It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature. "
